I want to get the DJI Phantom 2 and strap a GoPro Hero 3+ Black to it.

I want to mount my Samsung S4 to the remote control and get a remote video feed sent from the GoPro to the S4 both to know where the drone is flying and to frame my shots.
I also need control of the gimbal's rotation and tilt during flight.
And I need to control the GoPro while it's in the air. Like while I'm filming I want to also shoot some photos.

So far the list of parts is:

DJI Phantom 2 (includes battery + controller)
GoPro Hero 3+ Black
DJI GoPro Gimbal
Phone Holder (to mount to the controller)

What do I need to transmit the GoPro video feed to my phone?
What do I need to control the GoPro while it's in flight?
What do I need to control the gimbal's tilt while in flight?

The DJI website is so scattered in terms of what parts are needed that I can't make heads or tails out of anything.

You cannot use the wifi on the GoPro ro link to your phone because A: The range is too short and B: It interferes with the radio control signal to the quadcopter itself. Your options are to either move to a Phantom Vision+ which has a camera with high powered wifi built in, as well as a gimbal, or use an FPV system to relay the video to a monitor. Relaying the video feed to your phone is very difficult to achieve, hence why most people use a dedicated monitor.

You control the gimbal tilt via a lever on the back of the R/C, or via the smart phone app on the P2V. Rotation is achieved by yawing the quad itself. Using Course Lock, you can do this while still flying fairy straight.

You can buy the FPV system from DJI, but there are better systems out there from other manufacturers. Check out Immersion R/C and Boscam for starters.

I guess your first decision is whether or not to go for a P2V+ with your Samsung or stick with your P2 plan but buy a full FPV system for it. There are pros and cons to both systems, which are discussed in depth on the forum.

Ohhhh... I see. Thanks!

I can't move to a Vision+ because the Hero 3+ Black has ProTune for some rudimentary picture control and allows flat color profiles, which is crucial to getting the look you want out of your film.

BUT from what it sounds like, control of the GoPro during flight is IMPOSSIBLE, correct? The Phantom runs on 2.4GHz while the Vision and Vision + run on 4.8GHz. Would it then be possible to order a Vision and remove the stock gimbal + camera and put on the GoPro3 gimbal + GoPro? That way you'd have the Phantom being controlled on 4.8GHz and the GoPro controlled on 2.4GHz. The GoPro WiFi Remote (not the app) has a range of 600ft.

Going by the amazon add it says it can only be used with hero 4s (Complete Camera Control: Delivers full remote control of all camera functions, including shutter, on/off and settings. Settings/Tag Button: Quickly adjust settings and tag video highlights to quickly find later for playback, sharing and editing (HERO4 Cameras ONLY).
As far as camera control,do as 99% of others and i do, just start it when you take off,it isnt that horrible.

I may be wrong, but I think the GP3 remote is still wifi?

What do you need to control on the camera? Most of us just set it running before the flight and use the interval record for stills.

Wifi has to be SWITCHED ON on the GoPro for the remote to operate/communicate with the camera and there is your problem.
