Is it OK to power up with GoPro disconnected ?

I have a GoPro Hero camera with a damaged USB port but it still works, and I have an alternate means of charging the battery. I realise this is not going to be useful for FPV, but I wanted to try in the my Phantom to do some filming.

Now I realise that the HD-3D should not be powered up without a camera fitted, I assume that is because the motors need some weight in place to work against.

If I fitted the camera to the gimbal but did NOT plug in the USB plug would this break the gimbal.

In fact, would this harm anything.

It's ok to power it up without connecting the go pro. My flying buddy thought he might get longer flight times by NOT connecting the go-pro, he's been flying it that way for 4 months...
