You will find the same functions in both apps.
I prefer to use iPad mini Retina, the battery on an iPhone5 drains very fast using the DJI app.

Size matters... to a point. And then starts to be a detriment.
I would not go all the way up to a full-sized iPad. I've heard that, even for those who have gotten it to work (apparently it doesn't, always), the refresh is horrible.
