i see some guys on here saying they have gone above 400 feet! How do they do that,

While it's not the most responsible thing to do in many cases, you can fly up to 500 meters high. You need to adjust the "Set Maximum Flight Altitude" setting in the "Main Controller (MC) Settings" section of DJI GO.
