Forced firmware update - why and when?

Hi all,

I saw this thread:

How DJI is ruining my holiday right now!
Where a guy is not able to update firmware on his drone, after the drone was locked with a request of a mandatory update.
My question is - in which situations is such an updated forced?
What triggers it? Does a new version of DJI go 4 app trigger it? Or it would be triggered even on an old version? Or it is not version related?
I am afraid to get into the same situation.

I haven't encountered a force update* It does prompt to update the firmware, but I decline and move on. That might also be the phantom 4 original too, so that might be slightly different than the pro version; DJI hasn't forced an update on my p4p.
