flying without skids/landing gear…has anyone ever tried it?

I was thinking of the possibility of modifying a P2 to fly without skids. Just having the Zenmuse underneath and somehow rigging the antennas and compass in a way that it's still functional. designing a take off dock/platform that the P2 sits on and hand catching during landing. Would CG play a big part with the removal of the skids?

I have no there reason for this configuration other than lowering the weight.

Where, exactly, would you grab it for hand-catching other than by the legs??

While I haven't officially weighed them, I have to believe the legs aren't heavy enough to make that big of a difference, when you consider even the limited amount of protection they provide for the gimbal.

By the props, of course.
At least, that's what Chuck Norris would do.

Uh... no... Chuck would catch it in his teeth.

I catch my P1 by one of the skids. I catch my Plus by the battery.

Flip?? I wouldn't EVER put that thing in Manual mode. Lol.

Three questions:

1. <nitpick> With 8 motors/props on 4 arms, is it a quadcopter or an octocopter? </nitpick>

2. Which way do the bottom props rotate? Same as the top motors? Or do they counter-rotate so that each arm has net zero torque?

3. What's the payload capacity on that thing?

:)

Re: flying without skids/landing gear…has anyone ever tried

1. The naming scheme is based off the rotors; so with 8, it'd be an octocopter.

2. Looking at the very beginning of the video when it was still sitting on the railing, it's clear from the top-right arm that the props are spinning in opposite directions.

3. None, with no room to hook anything to it! :p (But if you could hang something from the battery/underside, it is an interesting question)
