Looking for any guidance on an external payload controller to use the release mechanism like this one

Quanum RTR Bomb System 1/6 scale Plug-n-Drop

Obviously would be more elegant if could use the P3 controller, but are there any 5.8GHz, 900MHz solutions with a 9V battery to receive on aircraft and activate the servo remotely?

Creativity and ideas are welcome!

Contact RCDepotHobbies to see if they will sell you [just] the 'module' used to control their retracts using the OEM transmitter's Flight Mode (P.A.F.) switch.

That's asking for trouble, kind of like the jackass's that came up with the handgun phone case

Take a look at this device. Actually, it's a remote power switch which can manage high loads (upto 190A peak)
You may connect it to your battery (3S-6S) and switch power to any external load with a button on separate long range rc.
Both rc and receiver can be powered with 9V.
To move the servo you will need an adaptor which will convert DC to PWM.
