Hi,

Just wondering what export settings everyone uses for uploads to Youtube / Vimeo?

I've tried a good few different combinations of settings and using original mp4's rather than converted cineform files and can't seem to get my videos to look anywhere near as clean as many others i've seen on the same websites no matter what i try.

Guess no one uses their phantom to take gopro videos and upload them to youtube. Ah well it was a crazy thought anyway, people would never do a thing like that :|

Sounds like you have a GoPro/YouTube question, not a DJI Phantom question. There's plenty of information on how to upload the best GoPro video to YouTube if you're willing to SEARCH... crazy thought anyway, you would never do a thing like that :|

I did search here through page after page but found nothing useful or relevant.

Have found a few other sites / youtube tutorials that explain best practices, but have seen a high number of people uploading videos on here that that look a lot better quality than mine and thought maybe, just maybe that someone would see this post and might have had the same issues I am having (since we all do pretty much the same thing) and cared to share any tips they had.

I also don't like youtube because if you use copyrighted music, they mute the audio and send you a warning, or just remove your video all together. Vimeo does not do any of those things.

I'm a big fan of Vimeo. Not so much a fan of youtube. I upload to Vimeo usually at 720P 60fps only because it takes forever at higher resolutions.

Here is one of my Phantom 2 videos... http://vimeo.com/89824305

I did try vimeo with the same video however it actually looked worse (due to 500mb upload limit I had to reduce the bitrate)

Is your vimeo account pro? Is that an hd video? I'm on iPad now and it doesn't have the hd button but not sure if it's the iPad or the video.

I paid the yearly subscription for "plus". It's really not that expensive (can't remember the exact price).

Yes, it's HD 720P video.

I think i might need to do that :(

I've been trying to get this video to look anywhere near as good as it does on my laptop, but ain't having much luck...

Youtube Orig (~35mbit bitrate): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW2CTrx89PU
Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/89944223 (lower bitrate to get down to <500mb)
Youtube (lower 15mbit bitrate) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEtmhfbd8Jc (actually seems slightly better)
Youtube 50Mbit bitrate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_xJ2rTSAHE

All 1080p 30fps. I understand there will be compression added, but there must be a way to help and remove the compression artefacts that you see..

I've spent the past few days exporting video and uploading it tediously over and over, hoping for some change that just isn't coming

Sounds like you were simply browsing through pages, not searching. Keep in mind there's other sites to search. I found a website called google.com that is pretty helpful in finding results when you search for something. Try narrowing your search by including the editing platform you failed to mention in your post. That will help you find more relevant search results.

Good luck!

Did you not read the next line? [Have found a few other sites / youtube tutorials that explain best practices]

Also, what do you do after you hit the search button when searching? I don't know about you, but I start browsing through the pages of your search results. Searching "without browsing through pages" as you so rightly put it, would be a complete waste of time. So you are at least half correct, i was browsing through pages, however it was pages of search results, on both that magical website you mentioned called google.com, and here.

Are you using your edit programme to export the vidoe to YouTube or the upload feature on YouTube itself?

I use the go pro program and it has a YouTube export setting that looks great

I'll give that a shot, but to be honest I'm leaning towards the "it's just youtube" argument, and more than likely going to upgrade to vimeo pro.

+1

Sometimes you have to compensate for what is lost in the process. I guess you are not shooting in ProTune but even so a little bit of grading and sharpening will help... If you looking for the very best picture quality then you need to be doing this anyway.
This is a guide I put on another thread.

To be honest I tend to just upload from FCP X using the file share option - knowing that most people won't even bother to select the 1080p viewing option.

Pretty good read and tips. I had same questions but when you get responses like Jasper's, some won't ask. Thanks for the positive responses and ignore the negatives.

Thanks for the guide, don't have a mac for fcpx but I'm sure some of the skills will transfer over to the adobe suite.

I just want it to actually look like a crisp clean video, like the gopro vids look locally.

Maybe a bit of sharpening would help define things for when youtube adds their compression. I think I'll try that next, before paying for Vimeo.

There is no such thing as a silly question - But there are smart axxx'd answers that serve no purpose at all. Enough said.
