I would like to record my OSD data. I know many are doing this and I think a *good* recording might also have a place in some produced footage.

I know this has been discussed - I've found links to summaries and such but they are all either out-of-date or miss the mark.

Here is one suggested link: https://www.google.com/search?q=portable+dvr

Unfortunately, almost everything that comes up is a camera with no video in or a very expensive alternative.

I tried an EzCap and the darn thing failed after the first flight - it wouldn't even come up on my good laptop. Trying to get the seller to take it back right now - although it did come with two nice video plugs that were worth the price of the whole thing. The EzCap also had a poor video balance - I ended up maxing out the brightness and contrast and still had poor video. You are tied to the laptop with it. However, it DOES work for some. Here is a short video that I took with it - it kinda shows several drawbacks.

Helipal has a $129 solution that is a receiver and DVR combined. The say it isn't much but it works. Anyone purchased one? The link to it is here: http://www.helipal.com/airy-2-5-all-in- ... order.html It records in 640 but it also can be used as a ground monitor.

I found a really cheap DVR on eBay, it is here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/130937804818?ss ... 1423.l2649 Unfortunately it only records at 640. It is cheap, though (did I say that?) so I ordered one just to check it out.

I also found a couple of nice solutions by scrounging around Amazon and getting a couple of links from some questions I had. These are $200-$300 solutions for the most part but they are also nice DVRs and likely to last. The first is a Lawmate you can see it at: http://www.amazon.com/DVR-Button-Camera ... awmate+dvr and the next was found by asking a question on Amazon. However, they are horribly over-priced. They are offering a MUVI for $109 which can be purchased for less than $50. You can see it here: http://stuntcams.com/shop/advanced_sear ... =2a&page=2

So... anyone have a link to a fairly nice dvr for a reasonable price?

I just bought one of these -> http://fpv-japan.com/item/fj-dvr-sd4/lang/en/
It's been to cold to get out in the field to test, but just around the house it seems to work well. Super customer service - they reply almost instantly and shipping from Japan to Minnesota - less than a week.

Accchhhhh.. I had that one in my bookmarks and didn't add it in my first post. Yes, that does look nice. Did you get any extras or just the basic gear?

I don't know what exactly you want to record from your OSD data but a cheap alternative could be using Flytrex and dashware here is an example of it .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5YgSMaZJE8

That's inexpensive and does show recorded data well. I was looking for something more native and quicker. However, there is a definite advantage in that the video is well re-produced (unlike my example in my first post).

It is colder than a well-digger's butt here but I've still been going out. I ordered one of these. I'm taking a trip to the high desert in 10 days so I hope it gets here in time. It will be nice to fly in warm weather. Will report back when I get it.

I just got the basic. Re: flying in cold - I do it all the time, just did the P1 to P1.5 conversion and am still testing new batt set up, but haven't been out long because of cold.

My biggest problem is my fingers going numb. I can fly with flight gloves but not with anything that will keep me warm. At about five minutes, I have to bring it back and go hide in the truck and get warm.

For the alternatives posted ( which look good ) has anyone purchased one and used it?

I originally looked at the Dronefly monitor w/built in SD card recorder - but monitor is tiny and Droneflys' "banner" reputation turned me away.

I'm using it w/my 7" Haier monitor and plans are to use DVR recording as PIP in videos. Also if my P1.5 decides to fly off on it's own, between Garmin GTU and recorded video with last recorded coordinates - finding will be a little easier.

Other forums info about Ren Heaysman (I believe is founder of FPV Japan) and his quality units made me look into and purchase his DVR recorder. Matter of fact, he replied immediately after I ordered and offered me options since China warehouse is in "New Years mode" and offered to ship from Japan if I wanted it quicker. It's not often the founder contacts you...

Here is a great, tiny SD card recorder with display and video/audio in cable and video/audio/power out cable. Rechargeable and awesome I use it on every flight just Velcro-Ed below my right controller stick. This is a must have and perfect size!

That's exactly the same unit from FPV Japan...

Search eBay for a 12v 2ch DVR, they are usually under the security category. I bought one for about $80 (I've posted links on here before). The one I have records video on 1 channel and only takes pics on the 2nd (I don't use the 2nd channel, tho I'm tempted to put a pinhole cam looking at my Tx to log the switch positions etc).

Last time I went flying I had a cloverleaf antenna work itself lose and fall off the phantom, I was able to use a spare and keep flying for what I was trying to do, but once I got access to a laptop, I pulled up the last frame on the DVR, checked the GPS co-ords, went back and found the antenna within a minute :)

That is a duplicate of my experience. I ordered it yesterday and it is coming from Japan. Very quick response to questions and payment.
