"Drone", jetliner nearly collide

Yeah I just saw that on CNN. Doh!

This story broke on CNN as "BreakingNews" a US Air Commuter jet at 2300 Ft came in close contact head on with a fixed wing camouflage painted fixed wing unmanned aircraft, or as CNN described it generically as a Drone. This apparently happened in March and is just now being announced. It is obviously much different than a DJI Phantom or even their larger pro photog UAV's. But CNN just spouted a drone almost collided with a commercial airliner. They then called for laws to deal with drones. Not a great thing. Some idiot with a lot of resources and no brains or just an obvious criminally reckless attitude is set to give anything called a drone a bad name.

Here's the NBC National version. The airspace around Tallahassee Regional at 5 mmiles NE puts it right at the edge of the control zone which goes from 4100ft. to the surface. Outside that area the floor is 1400ft. If this was a drone at 2300ft. by the airport someone deserves to be in deep sht. I'd seriously question the pilot's ability at 160kts to identify something the size of a large seagull while on an approach.

That said, we have to know we're under a microscope right now, for really no reason other than someone's paranoia in politics.

Does it make a difference that it wasn't a quad? The news will say "drone" and the public will hear "drone." Drones can be multirotor and they can be fixed-wing.

Pilot and simulation both describe it as an airplane resembling a Camo color F-4 Phantom Jet

Just lovely. Pilot describes an F-4 Phantom and lazy journalist google Phantom and post the first image they find.

Just what our hobby needs. More yellow journalism.

Drone sounds scarier than model airplane and sells more papers.

THIS is the "drone" that was spotted.
