I got a backpack today and everything was fine but if I'm travelling with my drone do I need the gimbal lock as djis one is terrible I nearly break the gimbal taking it off and on, is it necessary to have one , and what would happen if you dont

You should definitely use a lock of some sort backpacking it.
Without one, you will likely damage camera / gimbal.
Look around, there are many different types, mainly from 3d printers.

Yes, you should always attach the gimbal lock before transporting your Phantom.

Here's a video showing how to attach the gimbal lock:

Definately needed. I think the DJI one is junk, so I bought one on amazon and use it every time. $5 vs. $250 for a new camera....

As the gimbal is not powered while storing, motors don't hold it to a position firmly. You will thus need a firm support in such cases. There are many available on eBay , buy the one you like it. We definitely need to support gimbal assembly from movements during transportation.

Always use the gimbal lock that came with the drone, works great and its easy to remove.

$1.50 on eBay, easier to work with then the DJI stock brace.
