Can anyone tell me why in the manual it says the use of an i pad air for the dji vision app and FPV is supported but not suggested but other I pads are? I have used it for very short flights without an issue. Is there any cause for concern?

There's no reason. It works fine. Nothing to be concerned about. The only real "reason" is that it is not "scaled" for the iPad. It's an "iPhone" as opposed to a "universal" app. But it works fine.

The latest versions on the app do not have that disclaimer.

I have been using Ipad mini since day one, over 50 flights

Starting to feel like I hijacked this post, sorry to OP.

When you are flying from one position (which I do most of the time), without walking around, then a normal camera tripod is the go - removes all the clutter and weight off your controller.

Here is a tripod mount which works well on iPads, iPad minis and other monitors. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/iPad-iPad-Mi ... 418fe3b279 (tripod not included)

This link is for eBay Australia where I bought mine, but I am sure you can find a similar one in your area. Works great!
