Curious comment since there have been multiple threads here confirming that many flyaway so could be contributed to operator error or inexperience

Flying away in any phantom 3 is pilot error, period. It has been demonstrated already. You need to make sure before flying that the home point has been recorded or the phantom will not be able to know which is the home point in a RTH mode.
