Dark bands

I recently got a variable nd filter:

I'm seeing subtle dark bands in my video:

I did some searches on the forum and found some people having issues with the props creating shadows. Couldn't find any videos or pictures though.

Do you guys think that's the cause (thus get a sunshade) or is it something to do with the variable filter?

It's how those variable filters work, it's a bit like combining two polarisers.
You will often see a sort of cross - it happens in still photos too.
They have their uses but you have to accept this will happen, it's a feature not a fault ;)
The more expensive ones probably minimise it but still suffer to some extent.
 
I tried one of those neewer filters on my fc40 w/ gopro. Name issues. They also can cause tint shift. It's a nice idea in principle, but just isn't very useful given the image issues.
