After flying my p3p down to 12% battery level I landed and let it idle on the ground till I got a critical low battery warning at 10% level, seconds later the motors shut down. I'm assuming if I had kept it in the air it would have used the last 10% to return to home. That's a smart battery, I think?

It shut down as it had landed. You can cancel rth and continue to fly (you will get critical battery and propulsion limited errors) and need to fight to maintain altitude but it will continue to zero %. I landed at 1% once (not by choice, misjudged wind on return leg.

It's risky flying the last 10% because the battery could shut down before 0% if the cells aren't well balanced.
