Why pretend? Buy yourself a busted up P3 for a cheap price and give him the box of parts. "Sorry, but it crashed, you know there was an issue with firmware 1.5, correct? If he is a good friend he will understand.

Then keep his good one. Now that will REALLY be messing with him.
