Cheapest device to use for dji 3

after discovering I can't fly it using my iPhone 5c, what the cheapest way to get it up in the air. I saw a post that someone said they used a 5c to control it.
I am not techy at all so need a bit of advice.

What does the phone or tablet need to work with the drone?, ie gps SIM card or just a wifi connection. I'm clueless.

You don't need a sim card or Wi-Fi connection. You'll need to be connected to the Internet at some point to cache the maps before flying though. Otherwise, the maps won't be available when flying.
