Now this is severely off topic, but I have been scouring the UK for an answer for weeks.
Maybe you guys over the pond can help.

I have a Citroen Picasso 2.0Hdi.and I need to replace the starter motor.
It is the number of teeth on the pinion gear that is the issue. Suppliers are specifying varying numbers-
9,12 ( I assume this means 9,10,11 or 12)
10,12
11
10

I would have thought that the teeth count was specific, but suppliers are saying it's variable.
This makes no sense to me.

why not replace with the same amount of teeth as fitted ?
is this an aftermarket factors telling you these are different types ?
being the hdi engine there are many variants possibly due to solid or dual mass flywheel types

My problem is that I think the wrong starter is fitted. I have the OEM part no. but cannot find out the teeth count.

But I think I may have sussed the multiple pinion sizes. I reckon that each size has a specific casting so that the correct relationship between pinion and flywheel is maintained.
