There is a video on youtube that shows one being flown for about 12.5km before the signal got fuzzy.
What makes the signal fuzzy is what is between the transmitter and receiver.
If you stood in the middle of lake michigan, you might get a good signal from shore to shore.
But in downtown Los Angeles, youu'd e lucky to get a good signal in a few blocks.
