Do I have to be careful not to hold the left stick down for 3 seconds or longer if I want to quicken my decent from a high altitude? In other words, does the drone consider current altitude before allowing the 3 second shut-down to be initiated? I sometimes want to descend as rapidly as possible to a lower altitude before then bringing it in slowly to land. Accidentally shutting off the props at high altitude would bring her down a little faster than I would like. Thanks.

Holding the left stick down for 3 seconds while at altitude or in flight has no effect. It will just descent at 2 m/s or whatever. Once you have landed (ground or caught)..let go of left stick and then hold down again for 3 secs, motors will then turn off.

I was scared also in the beginning, but i now hold the left stick fully down wile in flight ( when it has altitude ) with no issue's.
You can't yaw though when holding it all the way down.
