I would like to create a waypoint mission that has the first point 3000 feet from the take off point. It will then return eventually ending up near the take off point. Will this mission load?

3000' (915m), should be fine as 2000m is the max distance between WPs. Need to bear in mind the overall mission length, your height settings when out of LOS and leave enough fat for changing wind conditions etc. I usually stick to 10-12 mins so that the smart RTH doesn't kick in.
