Maybe you could fashion something like that from cheap glowsticks. They make all kinds of connectors for modeling with them. Not much protection in a crash but would look funky in the dark. :)

I got a 3+Black a couple of weeks ago and it is pin sharp. There was a problem with some of the early ones but they seem to have sorted it out in the more recent stock. Try and get one from a supplier that has a big turn over of gopros so that you are sure to be getting a fresh one. My ebay...
