Thought I would give an update.
You were pretty much spot on, turned out one of the pins inside the connector on the board had bent and was subsequently crimped when I pushed the compass back in.
Straightened out the wire, reconnected and bingo!

Did anyone ever figure this out? I crashed mine from a couple of meters. Repaired all the obvious damage but can't fly because of this error.
I have swapped out the compass twice and still get the magnetic field interference error. The drone won't calibrate and all zero's on compass sensors.

Apologies for dragging up this thread but I'm pretty sure I suffered from this fate a few days ago and would like to share my experience in the hope of some advice.
I had owned my (bought from a friend) Phantom 3 standard for about 2 weeks and had several hours of problem free flying...
