Time will tell for sure. My money is on the official death of the Phantom line, but I've certainly been wrong before.
I'm just happy to see the innovation in the industry. Now some of the other players like Yuneec, 3DR, etc. need to keep upping the ante.
The iPhone/iPad comparison doesn't really work in this case. The form factors of those 2 products are the primary distinguishing characteristic. They do the same thing -- one is just bigger than the other. The Phantom series cannot do what the Mavic can do -- namely fold up into a very small...
That's not a bad analogy, but it would be like comparing a last generation desktop with a latest generation, high-end ultrabook with a faster processor, more memory, and more features. In this scenario, why would you ever buy the desktop? It makes no sense. It has zero advantages and a whole...
No, the timing of the Mavic release was planned in accordance with the GoPro. They wanted to make sure they had the upper hand before GoPro could gain market share. This is worth far more than the limited cannabalization of the Phantom series. In other words, to stay squarely on top, DJI was...
Very well stated -- and that's precisely what they did. I think it will end up being a very smart move in the long run, as the Mavic has essentially killed the Karma right out of the gate.
Well, you just disproved my theory with this post. I honestly didn't think anyone would even consider buying a Phantom 4 (unless the price were cut in half or more) now that they've seen the future with Mavic.
I really can't imagine DJI continuing the Phantom line now that Mavic is out. If there is a Phantom 5, I'll be very surprised. I think the P4 is the last iteration of the Phantom.
I've already listed my P3 rig on eBay. Once I saw what the Mavic has to offer, I see no reason why on earth anyone would even consider buying a Phantom. DJI couldn't give those away now that the Mavic is in the lineup.
From my perspective (granted, my experience is limited to watching videos...
I appreciate your point of view (and I share your disdain for "Vlog folks," believe me), but I don't agree with your assessment of the Mavic. Granted, I've obviously not seen or flown one personally yet, but from the research I've done, it's everything the P4 is -- and more. It's the best of...
I think you're exactly right. The Phantom series is officially cooked now that Mavic is on the scene. The Mavic is a superset of everything the Phantom has to offer plus immeasurably more given it's size, speed, portability, etc.
I find it nearly impossible to believe that the camera on the Mavic is inferior to the one on the P4. That just doesn't make any sense. If anything, I would fully expect it to be better.
That's a very good point. I love the innovation we're seeing in the industry, but it's almost going too fast at this point. I buy a new iPhone every 2 years, and that's perfectly good enough. With drones, you almost have to buy a new model every year just to keep up. With my luck, I'd buy this...
Just my opinion, but I highly doubt the P4 would be significantly more stable in high winds -- maybe a little, but certainly not enough to sway a buying decision.
To me, the Mavic just completely replaced the Phantom as the DJI consumer drone. Frankly, I'd rather have the Mavic than an Inspire.
