I got it to work. the sticks were not calibrated properly. the first time i did it, i ran quickly through the motions and it did not register the full range of each stick. i redid the entire setup last night and now everything works perfectly! i even tried my fpv goggles for the first time...

i tried it both ways, just left stick and both and it does not start. i got it new, hopefully, from amazon. however some reviews of this vendor says that they were duped and got refurbished instead of new. everything was packaged nicely so i could not tell if it is refurbished.
