This is precisely why all professional multi-rotors are hex- or octo-rotor craft, because they can land gracefully after a motor failure. You really don't want your professional video gear to fall out of the sky if a motor fails!

That only happens if the flight controller detects that the quad has stopped descending - ie when you've landed. It doesn't shut off the motors in flight. Only a CSC will do that. I do it every time I descend. It absolutely not not trigger an auto-land!
