I would ask you why you want to update in the first place? Most P3P pilots say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," because updating merely causes much woe. I haven't updated my P3P in 3 years, and it still flies like a champ.

How close are you to a Class B or Class C airport? That may be your problem. P3P has geofencing so that the motors won't even turn on if you are within a mile of such an airport.
Lessee, 2 years plus 18 months equals 42 months. Who knows what is coming down the pike in that time, either in terms of a retrofit system for Phantoms - or a better and less expensive sUAS? I sure don't know. In the meantime, I intend to enjoy doing a lot of P3P flying over the next 42 months...
