Problem is likely the cable you bought. It isn't worth buying a knock off cable as they often don't work properly. Buy a OEM dji cable and it'll likely be fixed.

It works but the limitations is that it uses 2G cell service and that's being phased out by many carriers. With less coverage you may not be able to find your UAV in an area with little coverage.
Open the UAV up and fill the ends with Plast-Aid. The stuff is seriously amazing. You won't need to worry about cracks after that. I've done it and then just use the part of detachable prop guards as an extra measure.
What Vichlan said and I'll add:
If you're shooting only photos ditch the ND filter and use a polarizer. You want the fastest shutter speed possible to eliminate any camera shake.
Shoot in Raw (DNG format)
Bracket your shots whenever possible as the dynamic range of the camera is often exceeded...
I use my Note 4 and it's fine for me. One less thing to carry. It does burn through your battery though so have spares.
