P4P vs Mavic 2 for distance flying ?

It's better to cancel RTH before the battery drops to 10%. Pilot the drone manually at 12-13% battery level or above. If the P4P is in the RTH mode and the battery level hits 10%, it will likely first rotate to its take-off orientation before initiating a forced descent. This may add to the...

    Possibly the best drone save

Well, he could have moved the drone toward the lawn, even if the battery is below 10%.

    Drone crashed after using RTH

See this dropbox clip (720p) -- The DJI OA system was apparently triggered by a pole of 4-5 cm in diameter, although the abrupt OA braking was entirely unnecessary as the AC was travelling sideways to the left in a Litchi mission.

It's barely outside the NFZ, and its a restricted zone with a ceiling of 120m.

You are absolutely correct! The second I saw on the phone the AC being so close to the tree branches I pushed left stick forward :D the backward move was not done by me, though. Movements other than ascent (and some horizontal motion) are not written anywhere in the manual ;)

West Lake in China's finest city, Hangzhou :) (not exactly countryside -- the home point was very close to the evening concert of 2016 G20 Hangzhou summit).

    Drone crashed after using RTH

See this dropbox clip (720p) -- The DJI OA system was able to detect those leafless winter branches, and moved the AC up (and backward) until re-establishing RC contact. Maybe the lighting condition was at optimal at the time for the OA.

The point being: the visible light has wavelengths about 390–700nm, which is 6 orders of magnitude smaller than the size of the reflectors in the car or in the flashlight. Thats how reflectors of EM waves would work. If the reflectors are about the same size as the EM wavelength, you need to...

    Drone crashed after using RTH

Look at the physical dimension of a satellite dish for 12-14 Ghz EM transmission -- you will see the dish size is at least an order of magnitude larger than the wavelength of the EM transmission, @With The Birds :

Can you tell us about the wavelength of visible light, Prof With-the-birds?

    Drone crashed after using RTH

I believe those Chinese drone hobbyists in the video (maybe also NeverMindYourOwn) learned how to edit the .DJI.configs file to fly with FCC compliance long ago. In fact, they live in the same southern Chinese city of Shenzhen DaJiang Innovation is headquartered, and perhaps some of them even...

    Drone crashed after using RTH

Humidity absolutely plays a role in EM signal attenuation. It would be nice to find a roof top to launch the P4P with unobstructed view over an area one wants to fly over. Even with vertical takeoff and zero distance, the P4P cannot maintain connections with RC at a height of 480m with RC...

    Drone crashed after using RTH

Thank you for your time and elaboration, John. However, I still have doubts on your claim that "I can't remember the last time I've lost a connection with my P4P," if you are indeed using a stock (GL300F) RC. The "usefulness" of the so-called “windsurfer" reflectors, which seems to defy physics...

    Drone crashed after using RTH

How was the light condition at the time of the unfortunate crash? Last dec I also had a 40m RTH when AC travelled behind a small hill of about 50 m in height with small trees on the top. The forward OA system correctly detected the sparse tree branches, and raised the AC (even moved it...

    Drone crashed after using RTH

Wow, what equipment did you use when flying P4P ?! Was it a stock RC thats comes with P4P? In comparison with the Ocusync system of MP, the Lightbridge(2?) system seems very fragile to me, and signals can come and go with a slight change in the orientation of the RC antenna (with LOS, of...
