    Australian sub-2kg rules to stay

Here is the ICAO definition of the movement area: So it sounds like the 'movement area' is land that is within the airport itself. Edit: As an example, this map shows the movement area for Bankstown: mam-bankstown.pdf | Civil Aviation Safety Authority

    Australian sub-2kg rules to stay

I notice that CASA has also recently added to their website clarifications regarding flying near airports – i.e. that there's actually no such restriction in Australia, as long as you do so safely:

Licensing or certification no longer required for commercial drone flying in Australia

Seemingly going the opposite way of many other countries around the world tightening up drone laws, effective September 29, it is no longer necessary in Australia to have a licence or certification to fly drones under 2kg (such as the Phantom) for commercial purposes. Part 101 Amendments -...

    bad news again

Here in Australia, the regulation says "you should keep at least 5.5 km (3 nm [3.4 mi]) away from airfields, aerodromes and helicopter landing sites." However, note the "should". As a recreational flyer, it seems it's not actually required to stay 5.5 km away from airports, as long as you don't...

    First angry woman

Likewise, I am in Sydney. I try to avoid flying anywhere with people, but that can be hard in a big city like Sydney. When people do end up coming by when I'm flying, I've only had people interested in the drone, asking questions like how far it can fly, etc. Probably about a dozen interactions...

How far can you see your P3 at night?

At dusk over the ocean and watching it from the start, I lost sight of it at about 3 km (2 mi.).

    Australian Phantom Flyers!

Oh, yes, it's the GL300C. I didn't know you could use the Inspire RC with the Phantom 3 – you learn something new every day.

    Australian Phantom Flyers!

I'm using a Phantom 3 Professional with the stock controller (but with the DBS mod). I wonder how far it'd go if the battery wasn't a constraint.

    Australian Phantom Flyers!

I can't say for stock (my P3P came pre-modded with the DBS antenna), but I got a bit past 5.4km yesterday with full video and controller signal strength: I would have been able to go even further if I had gone in a straight line: I started the RTH when the app prompted me, but the winds made...

    P3S + DBS 3km full signal

Where I took off from, it was no more than about 10m ASL. Yes, that's correct – 5.1km. I got even further yesterday – 5.4km; again, I was limited by battery. Would have been even further if I went in a straight line.

    P3S + DBS 3km full signal

I don't actually live around Kurnell – I just went there to fly the drone.
