Yes - I believe the 2 compass parts were only $20 or so total. What was complex was that the compass replacement requires opening both the main body and the legs - I wasn't competent to do that on the first try.
One last thought. As I look back at my original battery failure, I believe it's possible that it was caused by heat. When I connected the wiring, I used some cramping barrel connectors that also have heat shrink tubing on them. I carefully warmed with a heatgun, but noticed when I picked the...
Success. I should start by saying this is really a pretty simple hack, and I'm an idiot for screwing it up the first time. At least I can help others avoid my mistakes. Tips to add to the work that Solardude already contributed:
1. DONT RUSH. Just slowly plan things out and take your time...
Thanks, but there's realistically no way for me to figure that out. I didn't take step by step pics. I'm just going to have to go for it. I think I've got it figured out now. Will update everyone in a few days.
Yeah - I owe the group an update here.
My original thought was that I burned something on the RC mainboard in the process of doing the wiring, so I ordered a second RC. When that unit arrived (and while I was in the process of installing Jakes "clean install" kit, which rocks) I plugged the...
The service from Jeff and team is amazing. I ordered the Trekker and some filters. Jeff applied an "after order date" discount (I.e. A discount was offered after I ordered and he applied it anyway), and they included a filter case and gimbal cover (both unexpected and appreciated). Add in...
I used a certified 3rd party. Mainboard is expensive, as was labor. 2 x compass is only something like $20 for the parts. If your second compass is just disconnected from the mainboard, it's a relatively cheap fix (although I'm not willing to open the shell - many here do).
I was able to fly on just 1, but decided not to. Sent it in for repair. Turned out the 2nd compass connector on the mainboard had separated, so I needed to replace the mainboard (ouch) as well as the compass. Working fine now.
Thanks. I ask because I'm going to be flying over parts of the Great Lakes in about 3 weeks. Not only would I not expect to recover anything, but I wouldn't expect to be able to get the the "recovery area" in time to see this tiny float.
One trick on the tight fit - when you are ready to zip closed the internal cover (the one that can be tight, lift up on the OUTSIDE of the bottom of the bag a bit - it will loosen up the zipper fit quite a bit, and make it much easier to zip.
