Those that have it, will say it's necessary. Those stuck with the old 2D, will say it's not worth it. I have both, and let me tell you, I hardly use stabilization in my post production using my 3D. The video is very smooth almost like the camera is stuck on a post.
A little harsh...but I agree with others. why didn't you cut the throttle when it was stuck in the tree? You may need more practice in an open field or w/a smaller quad. GPS would not have helped you here.

I do it all the time when I want to descend quickly. But I only do it in bursts out of fear of the motors stopping in mid flight like the OP mentioned.
